BUYING GUIDANCE

What should I look for when buying a Clothes Washer?

Check the yellow EnergyGuide label

Use this label to determine the model’s energy use, compare the energy use of similar models,
and estimate annual operating costs. Learn How to Use the Federal Trade Commission’s EnergyGuide Label
and the Difference Between the Energy Guide and ENERGY STAR.

Think carefully about the size.

ENERGY STAR certified models are available in various product widths and drum capacities. Think about where you want
to place your clothes washer and whether you typically run small or large loads. ENERGY STAR certified models are also
available in stackable, under-the-counter designs, and combination washer-dryer designs which fit in smaller spaces.

Save the most by choosing a model with a high Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) and a low Integrated Water Factor (IWF).

Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) is a measure of energy efficiency that considers the energy used by the washer during the cycle and while on standby, the energy used to heat the water, and the energy used to run the dryer. The higher the IMEF, the more energy efficient the clothes washer.

Integrated Water Factor (IWF) is a measure of water efficiency in gallons of water consumed per cubic foot of capacity. The lower the IWF, the more water efficient the clothes washer. Both IMEF and IWF are provided for each model listed in the ENERGY STAR Product Finder.

Consider the benefits of front load

ENERGY STAR certified front load washers use about 45% less energy and 50% less water than a top load agitator washer.
In the past decade or so, top load impeller washers, which have a low-profile cone or disc instead of an agitator,
have become popular as a more energy- and water-efficient option compared to traditional top load washers. However,
compared to a top load impeller washer, front load washers are still about 25% more energy and water efficient.

In recent years, clothes washer technology has seen dramatic improvements in efficiency and functionality. Selecting an ENERGY STAR certified washer gets you all these premium features and functionality, with the following additional benefits:

  • Get a shower of water savings.
    New ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers use advanced technology to dramatically reduce water use. Full-sized washers that have earned the ENERGY STAR use 14 gallons of water per load, compared to the 20 gallons used by a standard machine.
  • Long live your clothes
    Clothes washers with agitators can be rough on your clothes and put them through extra wear and tear. ENERGY STAR clothes washers have sophisticated wash systems that use a variety of methods to lift and tumble your laundry, lengthening the life of often-washed items. Additionally, because they are so gentle, many models can safely clean silk, wool, and other hand-washables.
  • Take time out.
    Without a bulky agitator, there is more usable space in the washer for laundry — especially larger items like comforters. More capacity means fewer loads of laundry each week. What will you do with your extra time?
  • Save the environment.
    More than 60% percent of U.S. electricity is generated by burning coal and natural gas, which releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and contributes to climate change. ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers use less energy and help us reduce our impact on the environment. By reducing water consumption, they also put less strain on limited water resources. Washers according to GOST and DIN. Classification, overview, application

According to the terminology established by the State Standard No. 27017, adopted in 1986, a washer is a fastener that has a hole and is placed under the head of the rod connecting element – screw / bolt -, or under the nut. In this case, the following objectives are pursued: to prevent their spontaneous unscrewing and/or to increase the bearing surface. Part of the varieties of washers were named based on the features of the installation. Others are named so that the consumer knows the specifics of the design. This group includes, for example, spring washers, wavy, conical, disk-shaped, etc. The names of the third reflect the scope of their application – the washer is adjusting, locking, etc. Let us consider in more detail the main types of these fasteners.

Flat washers

It should be noted this point: the most important characteristic of a flat washer is its face value. Its value is determined by the maximum external thread diameter of the rod fastener, under the head of which it is possible to install the washer itself.

These sealing elements have found the greatest application. Flat washers are versatile: they are used in conjunction with rod fasteners of any kind, from bolts, including screws and studs, to self-tapping screws. This led to further improvement in the design of such parts. Today, such hardware is presented in a wide variety on the building materials market.

Extended washer

A special feature of enlarged flat washers is the ratio of outer and inner diameters (designation d outer and d inner , respectively). It should look like this:

d ext. ≈3×d int.

The production of these products is regulated by the provisions of GOST 6958-78 and the German standard DIN 9021. They establish one version of their execution.

However, the values of the parameters indicated in the drawing differ in different standards.

Dimensions approved by GOST 6958-78

The dimensions of the performance characteristics of enlarged washers, produced according to the provisions of the State Standard No. 6958 of 1978, vary in the following ranges:

  • washer rating (designation N sh. ) – min 1.00 mm; max 48.00 mm;

  • through hole diameter (“d 1 ”) in a product manufactured with an accuracy corresponding to class “A” – a minimum of 1.1 mm; maximum 37.0 mm; class “C” – minimum 1.2 mm; maximum 52.0 mm;

  • outer diameter of the washer (“d 2 ”) – from 4.0 mm to 145.0 mm;

  • part thickness (“s”) – not less than 0. 3 mm; no more than 10.0 mm.

DIN dimensions 9021

The preamble of this normative document says that it is preferable to use enlarged washers together with nuts and rod fasteners in accordance with the rules of ISO 272. The DIN 9021 standard establishes the following limits for changing the parameters of these parts:

  • washer rating – 2.70 mm ≤ N w ≤ 39.00 mm;

  • hole diameter (“d 1 ”) in the part: minimum – 2.70 mm; maximum – 40.00 mm;

  • outer diameter of the product (“d 2 ”): min 7.64 mm; max 110.0 mm;

  • part thickness (“s”) – from 0.70 mm to 9.20 mm.

Washer normal

They regulate the manufacture of washers of the normal provisions of GOST 11371-78 and the DIN 125 standard.

GOST 1371-78

This standard establishes 2 versions of these hardware. According to the drawing of the first version, normal washers are manufactured with an accuracy corresponding to the conditions of classes “A” and “C”, and the second – only with an accuracy of class “A”.

Below are the ranges for changing the dimensions of the parameters indicated in the drawings.

  • The thread diameter of a suitable core part is a minimum of 1.0; maximum 48.0.

  • Washer hole diameter (designation “d 1 “) accuracy class “A” – min 1.1 mm; max 50.0 mm. “C” – min 1.2 mm; max 52.0 mm.

  • Outer diameter of the product (parameter “d 2 ”): minimum 3.5 mm; maximum 92.0 mm.

  • Part thickness (designation “S”): not less than 0.3 mm; no more than 8.0 mm.

Dimensions according to D I N 125

The German standard DIN 125 establishes 2 versions of normal flat washers.

The limits of change of the parameters indicated in the drawings look like this:

  • nominal size (“N sh. ”) – minimum 1.7 mm; maximum 165.0 mm;

  • rod fastener thread diameter – min 1. 6 mm; max 160.0;

  • diameter of the hole in the washer (“d 1 ”) – from 1.7 mm to 166.0 mm;

  • outer diameter (“d 2 ”) – not less than 3.7 mm; no more than 250.0mm

  • product thickness (“h”) – not less than 0.25 mm; no more than 19.2 mm;

  • chamfer width (“d a ”) – minimum 1.8 mm; maximum 169.0 mm;

  • hole chamfer radius (“r”) – from 0.15 mm to 2.0 mm.

Normal washers according to DIN 125 standards must be produced with an accuracy of class “A”.

Reduced washer

Another common name for this hardware is a narrow washer. A reduced washer is placed, mainly under screws with a cap of a cylindrical configuration.

Dimensions according to GOST 10450-78

This standard applies to reduced washers, the manufacturing accuracy of which meets the requirements of classes “A” and “C”. It establishes one performance of these hardware.

The parameters of the narrow washer vary within the following limits:

  • threaded knurling diameter of rod fasteners – from 1.0 mm to 48.0 mm;

  • the diameter of the hole in the part (“d 1 ”), produced with an accuracy of class “A” – a minimum of 1.1 mm; maximum 37.0 mm; “C” – minimum 1.2 mm; maximum 52.0 mm;

  • outer diameter of the washer (“d 2 ”) – min 2.5 mm; max 84.0 mm;

  • product thickness (“s”) – from 0.3 mm to 6.0 mm.

Dimensions according to DIN 433

This standard establishes one version of reduced washers.

The range of their operating parameters is presented below.

  • Washer rating (“N sh. ”) – minimum 1.1 mm; maximum 37.0 mm.

  • The thread diameter of the rod fastener is from 1. 0 mm to 36.0 mm.

  • The diameter of the hole in the product (“d 1 “) – min 1.1; max 37.62

  • Outer diameter (“d 2 ”) – not less than 2.25 mm; no more than 58.0 mm.

  • Part thickness (“h”) – 0.25 mm to 5.6 mm

According to the provisions of DIN 433, narrow washers must be produced with an accuracy that satisfies the conditions of class “A”.

Spring washers

The spring washer is a cut ring with ends located in different planes. It is used to prevent spontaneous unwinding of the threaded connection. This is ensured by the elastic deformation of the washer, which occurs under the influence of an external load when tightening the fasteners.

Single coil spring washers

Both domestic and German regulatory documents regulate the production of single-turn spring washers.

Dimensions according to GOST 6408-70

This standard establishes two versions of these hardware. Their constructive difference lies in the shape of the cut.

In the first version, it is flat, and in the second, it is curved. In addition, the norms of GOST 6408-70 subdivide single-turn spring washers into light (marked with the letter “L”), normal (marked with the letter “H”), heavy (marked with the letter “T”) and extra heavy (marking is carried out by such a combination of letters : “OT”). The section of products of type “L” is rectangular, that is, b>s. Details of the remaining three types are characterized by a square section: b=s.

The ranges of change in the operating parameters of single-turn springs according to GOST 6408-70 are presented below.

  • The diameter of the threaded knurling of the rod fastener is from 2.0 mm to 48.0 mm.

  • Hole diameter (parameter “d”) – minimum 2.1 mm; maximum 48.5 mm. Limit deviations (designation “PO”) vary in the range +0.25 mm≤PO≤1.0 mm.

  • The width of the turn (“b”) for hardware of the type: “L” varies within 0. 8 mm≤b≤12.0 mm, and the maximum allowable deviations are ±0.08 mm≤PO≤±0.215 mm; “H” takes values from the range 0.5 mm≤b≤12.0 mm. Limit deviations are: ±0.08 mm≤PO≤±0.215 mm; “T” varies in the range of 0.6mm≤b≤12.0mm, and the limit deviations are ±0.07mm≤PO≤±0.35mm; “OT” varies within 3.5mm≤b≤12.0mm, and the maximum tolerance is ±0.24mm≤PO≤±0.35mm.

  • The thickness of the turn (“s”) for washers of type: “L” takes values from the range 0.5 mm≤s≤7.0 mm. Limit deviations are as follows: ±0.07 mm≤PO≤±0.18 mm; “H”, “T” and “OT” coincides with the width variation limits (“b”, see above), since its cross section has a square configuration. This also applies to the maximum allowable deviations.

  • The value of sharpening the end of the coil (parameter “k”) for hardware type “H” and “L” varies in the range of 0.15 mm ≤ s ≤ 0.8 mm.

An increase in the thickness of the coil (“s”) by no more than ± 10% does not bring the finished product into the defect category.

Dimensions according to DIN 127

This regulatory document establishes two versions of single-turn spring washers.

The operating parameters of these parts vary within the following limits:

  • washer rating (“N sh. ”) – 2.0 mm ≤ N sh. ≤100.0mm;

  • inner diameter (designation “d 1 “) – 2.1 mm≤ d 1 ≤101.0 mm;

  • outer diameter (parameter “d 2 “) – 4.4 mm ≤d 2 ≤131.0 mm;

  • the horizontal distance between the extreme points of the cuts (designation “h”) of the “A” shape – the minimum is 1.9 mm; maximum 21.2 mm; “B” – minimum 1.0 mm; maximum 18.9mm;

  • the height of the cut of the coil (designation “b” on the drawing of the form “B”) takes a value from the range of 0.9 mm≤b≤14.0 mm, and the maximum deviations are ±0.1 mm≤PO≤±0.25;

  • coil thickness (parameter “s” in the same drawing) varies within 0. 5 mm≤s≤8.0 mm. The maximum tolerance range is the same: ±0.1mm≤PO≤±0.25;

  • the width of the taper end of the coil (designation “k”) – from 0.15 mm to 1.0 mm;

  • the radius of rounding of the corners of the flat cut of the coil (parameter “r”) – not less than 0.1 mm; no more than 2.0 mm.

Spring washers complying with the provisions of DIN 127 must be used in conjunction with threaded rod fasteners with a strength not exceeding class 5.8.

Double coil spring washers

Regulates the production of 2-turn spring washers State Standard 21797-2014. Their field of application is the creation, together with bolts Ø22.00 mm and screws Ø24.00 mm (the symbol Ø indicates the diameter), of intermediate rail fasteners VSP (an abbreviation of the phrase Upper Structure of the Way) of railway lines.

This standard specifies only one design of 2-turn spring washers. Their dimensions are indicated on the drawings.

Requirements according to GOST 21797-2014

Let us name only the main requirements put forward by this regulatory document to the details under consideration.

  • For the manufacture of 2-turn spring washers, it is necessary to use alloyed hot-rolled spring-spring 40C2A; spring-loaded, with satisfactory plasticity, grades 40C2 and 60C2A.

  • Products that have passed the heat treatment stage must be characterized by a hardness of 41.5 HRC to 51.0 HRC.

  • Control of spring characteristics of heat-treated hardware is carried out by triple compression. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure that the height (designation “H”) is reached within 17.5 mm ≤ H ≤ 18.5 mm. The washer will be recognized as fit if after this procedure its parameters are the same as in the figure.

Roofing washer EPDM

At the moment, there is neither GOST nor the German DIN standard regulating the production of these parts. Meanwhile, roofing washers with an EPDM gasket are widely used today for arranging the roofs of country cottages and summer cottages. In their manufacture, steel mills are guided by the parameters of fasteners, together with which such washers provide reliable fastening of the metal profile with the roof lathing. These are self-tapping screws that meet the requirements of DIN 7504K.

Design

For the purpose of unification, ensuring interchangeability, the following generally accepted drawing is used for the production of EPDM roofing washers.

These parts consist of two different elements:

This combination of letters denotes the synthetic rubber Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. This compound has a combination of qualities that allows it to be used in roofing – resistance to solar radiation, ozone, polar solvents and dilute acids. In addition, this material retains elasticity even at temperatures below 0℃. This factor is very important from the point of view of the tightness of the places where the profiled sheet is attached to the roof sheathing.

Dimensions

Taking into account the joint use with DIN 7504K self-tapping screws, roofing washers with an EPDM gasket are most widely used, the operating parameters of which are presented (in millimeters) below in tabular form. The designation is taken from the drawing of the execution of these hardware (see above).

Multi-bladed lock washer

Such washers are used to lock slotted nuts of a round configuration, made in accordance with the standards of GOST 11871. Fixation is ensured by bending into the slot of the nut of the washer foot that is located opposite it.

Dimensions

The state standard number 11872 of 1989 establishes two versions of multi-bladed lock washers. In addition, he divides these hardware into 2 types – normal (denoted by the letter “H”) and light (marked by the letter “L”). Regardless of the type, it is possible to lock with such washers slotted nuts with a thread diameter (“D”) that takes values from the range of 4. 0 mm ≤ D ≤ 200.0 mm.

Below are the limits of changes in the parameters displayed in the drawings of designs.

  • Hole diameter (“d 1 ”) – minimum 4.2 mm; maximum 201.0 mm.

  • Diameter of a circle circumscribed around the outer edges of the legs (“d 2 ”) for products of the type: “L” – 18.0 mm ≤ d 2 ≤ 252.0 mm; “H” – 14.0 mm≤d 2 ≤252.0 mm.

  • The circumference diameter of the outer edge of the washer ring (“d 3 ”) for parts of the type: “L” – 11.5 mm≤d 3 ≤223.0 mm; “H” – 6.5 mm≤d 3 ≤225.0 mm.

  • Foot width (“b”) for products of the type: “L” – 3.0 mm≤b≤15.5 mm; “H” – 1.5 mm≤b≤15.5 mm.

  • The distance between the inner tab and the point on the inner edge of the washer, located diametrically opposite (“L”): min – 2.7 mm; max – 195.0 mm.

  • The height of the bend of the inner foot (“h”): not less than 1. 5 mm; no more than 14.0 mm.

  • The corner radius between the side of the presser foot and the outer edge of the washer (“r”) is from 0.2 mm to 1.6 mm.

  • Washer thickness (“s”): minimum 0.8 mm; maximum 2.5 mm.

The diameter of the support surface of the part (“d 4 ”) is approximately equal to the parameter d 3 . The bending radius of the presser foot (“r 1 ”) should be: r 1 =1.5×s.

Serrated lock washers

These auxiliary hardware, installed under the head of the rod fasteners, along with an increase in the supporting area, perform the function of locking the screws / bolts. The teeth create a springy effect, which increases the friction force between the threads of the parts that form the connection.

The production of toothed lock washers is regulated both by the domestic State Standard and the German regulatory document. Let’s briefly review their main provisions.

GOST 10463-81

This standard specifies 2 versions of washers with external teeth.

Products of the first option (drawing on the left) are used for locking screws / bolts, the thread diameter of which (designation D r.b / in ) takes values from the range of 2.0 mm ≤ D r.b / in ≤ 24.0 mm . Below are the limit values for the parameters of parts according to version No. 1.

  • Hole diameter (“d”): minimum 2.2 mm; maximum 25.0 mm. Permissible limit deviations (designation “R. devi.”) are +0.14≤R. devi. ≤ +0.33 (tolerance field h23).

  • Washer outside diameter (“D”): min 5.0 mm; max 36.0 mm. Maximum allowable deviations: -0.62 mm≤R.dev.≤-0.30 mm (tolerance range – h23).

  • Tooth thickness (“s”) varies between 0.2 mm≤s≤1.7 mm.

  • Diameter of a circle formed from the extreme inner points of the teeth (“D 1 “): from 3.0 mm to 29.4 mm.

  • Product thickness, taking into account the height of the teeth (“H”): not less than 0.6 mm; no more than 3.9mm.

Toothed washers of the second version (picture on the right) are used for locking rod fasteners with a thread diameter within 3.0 mm ≤ D r.b/v ≤ 24.0 mm. The ranges for changing the parameters indicated on the drawing of execution No. 2 look like this:

  • hole diameter (“d”): 3.2 mm to 25.0 mm. Limit deviations in the tolerance field h23 +0.18 mm≤R.off.≤+0.33 mm;

  • outer diameter of product (“D”): minimum 7.0±0.1 mm; maximum 38.0±0.1 mm. Maximum allowable deviations: -0.62mm≤R.dev.≤-0.36mm. Tolerance field h24;

  • diameter of a circle formed from the centers of semicircular recesses on the outer edge of the washer (“D 1 ”): min 6.5±0.1 mm; max36.0±0.1 mm;

  • diameter of semicircular recesses on the outer edge of the part (“d 1 ”): not less than 2. 0±0.1 mm; no more than 5.5±0.1 mm;

  • reference plane thickness (“s”) varies within 0.4 mm≤s≤1.5 mm;

  • product profile width including tooth height (“H”): 0.6 mm to 3.0 mm;
